Feathers of Stone

“Come on, Redfist!” one of the onlooking masters shouted. “Too many watching to back down now!”

I circled my opponent, not intent on ruining his reputation, but hoping to squeeze some good from this ridiculous fight.

The towering half orc had been the best Arbon had to offer in regards to spear masters.

I was sure I could meet with a real challenge if I wanted to improve my skill with the sword, but so far, Sherwood and I had been extremely disappointed with the masters that worked in the gymnasium.

Redfist lunged, his spear cleverly flicking down at my leading leg and then up into my face a second later.

I sidestepped the first and parried the second, my counterattack ruining the man’s predictable third move.

He’d been setting up to spin his spear in what I considered a wild and unreliable slashing movement.

Redfist had the strength and dexterity to pull off such a technique, but it brought more risk than it gained.

Even as he turned his spear’s shaft in his hands, hoping to gain enough speed to make the slash effective, I landed the blunted tip of the practice spear on the inside of his thigh.

The wound would have been fatal since I’d struck dead center in the meaty part of his leg.

Redfist growled as he stumbled back.

“Really? I thought you were the best,” the taunting master threw at him. “Starting to wonder.”

Redfist spat on the ground. “Fuck this. You think you can do better?”

The younger man, thinner of build but at least a twice-ascended champion, shook his head. “I’ve got a better idea. If you can’t beat The Butcher himself, then perhaps the both of us can.”

He stepped into the ring and shouted, “Name’s Harry, by the way. Always good to know the name of the man who beat you.”

I chuckled as the newcomer armed himself and took up a position beside Redfist.

By now, dozens of men and a few women had gathered alongside the training pit.

Sherwood and Rul leaned back against the wooden railing, looking smug and confident enough for me as well.

The thief cleared his throat loudly. “50 Gold has it my boy takes them both down!”

Rul laughed. He gave Sherwood a slap with the back of his hand. “Don’t be a fool. Even Dagon can’t best two masters at once. Besides, can’t you see he’s tiring?”

Perhaps pissed off that two of their best were being put to shame or else encouraged by Rul’s obvious lie, almost ten hands rose from the gathering crowd.

“I’ll take that bet!” one man shouted.

Others joined in, and soon a group of fools were opposed against Sherwood, betting their coin to see me fall.

I sighed and prepared for a real fight.

Can’t blame the bastard, I thought. He can’t be a thief anymore, might as well let him still be a scoundrel.

The fight began a moment later as Harry dashed forward with incredible speed.

For some reason, he instantly showed himself to be the better fighter among the two masters.
